The Leisure Seeker - On The Road To Florida With Hemingway, Whiskey & Alzheimers

This week I saw The Leisure Seeker directed by Paolo Virzì, a last trip for the old RV belonging to Donald Sutherland and Helen Mirren.

John & Ella are coming to the golden end of their lives, but they're determined it will be on their terms. So it's off to the Florida Keys and the lifelong desire for John to visit Hemingway's home. A retired literature professor whose memory is failing, but heck he can still quote The Old Man And The Sea, and drive the Winnebago. Just about. It's a love letter to the US across the miles, from Massachusetts to the sea with two wonderful actors. Of course their kids played by Christian McKay and Janel Moloney are none too happy with their parents skipping town, but if faded southern belle Mum turns off the mobile, well there's not a lot they can do.

With many funny and also heartbreaking moments, and Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign for company, it's the bittertweet ride of a lifetime. Memories are shared and secrets are spilled, and god help anyone who takes on Ella. Including John.

Mildly terrifying to me to think about what the future might bring, but Paolo Virzi has crafted a thoughtful movie with the right amount of laughter during this sensitive and loving time of life.
