Amuary-Duvail La Naissance de Vénus Palais Beaux Des Arts De Lille

Visiting the Palais Beaux des Arts de Lille there are many beautiful paintings in the collection. Including this one by Eugène Emmanuel Amaury Duval, (as he was known rather than Duvail). The Birth of Venus, or La Naissance de Vénus here, is a popular subject for painters. Not least because the Botticelli version is one of the world's most famous paintings.

Venus was the Roman goddess of love, sex, beauty, and fertility, and in Greek she is the goddess Aphrodite. But it is Venus we remember. And from the 1862 painting we can see why.

This similar painting was sadly destroyed in WWII.
